Online Christian College Degrees

Online Christian College Degrees: Not just for religion majors!

I was pretty surprised when a friend of mine said she was going to get her online degree through a Christian university.  I mean, I thought that online Christian college degrees fell into two categories: People who were going to go to seminary, and people who were majoring in religion for some other reason.  I didn’t want to act too surprised, or pry, but I hadn’t been aware she was considering either of those things.

“What are you going to major in?” I asked.

She looked confused.  “Didn’t we talk about this lots already?  I’m going into business.”

“Um,” I said, “Do they have a business program, what with being a Christian school and all?”

She laughed.  “Is that what this is about? Online Christian college degrees aren’t just for like, wannabe ministers, you can take all kinds of different majors.”

What Makes Online Christian College Degrees Different?

It definitely piqued my curiosity.  I was pretty active at my own church, and my faith is really important to me.  But so are my academic goals, and I didn’t want them to conflict.  I was afraid that maybe online Christian colleges were just thinly veiled programs to convert people to a different denomination or something.

Thankfully, I was wrong.  There are some online colleges, of course, that are more fundamentalist.  But most online Christian college degrees are just offering students the chance to learn the same material, except within an educational tradition that’s backed by Christian ethics and morals.

The online Christian college I finally decided on wasn’t the same denomination as the church I actually belong to, but it hasn’t made any difference for me.  I’ve since learned about the long tradition that Christianity has in supporting education, and I believe I’ve made the best choice.
